During my spring break I enjoyed myself by keeping myself busy at the studio. I wanted to challenge myself in making baby heads each with different expressions. I completed three heads while working on my large ceramic heads as well. This was the outcome of my challenge.

Head #1: Crying baby with NG Tube

Baby #2 Smiling baby

Baby #3 Sleeping baby with pacifier

Artist Proposal

Concept: As the years go by more and more children are being diagnosed with cancer while not enough awareness or funds are given to these children. My intention to bring awareness to what childhood cancer looks like and the reason why these children deserve more than four percent of the federal government cancer research funding. The faces used to portray my art work is because faces show the different emotions one feels by a simple smile or frown. Bringing awareness to my community of how real this disease is a way to speak for those children whom are currently battling, survivors or those who have gained their wings at such a young age.

Aesthetics: My series will contain three 24” ceramic sculptures of children faces. First one representing the diagnosed the face will be that of an infant since cancer does not respect age, sex, race or wealth. This first piece is going to be set with an alarm set to beep every two minutes an IV Pole transformed into a lamp will light up the vessel is representing how every two minutes a new child is diagnosed with this horrible disease. The second vessel is representing death. The face on the vessel will have a peaceful look to resemble how the child is finally resting. The death vessel will contain 250 smaller heads inside is to represent how many children die of cancer daily worldwide. The third vessel is for survival. The survival vessel you can see through the child’s eyes with an otoscope seeing a 12” ceramic full body sculpture of a child whom has damaged organs representing that even though the child has beat cancer their body will still be fighting other diseases because of all the harm the treatment did to their bodies.

Technique: I will build the large ceramic heads by utilizing the coil method as my main technique. I first started using the coil method in inspiration to how artist Aimee Perez would build her heads, watching her demo video helped me personally. after having the main shape I will start adding detail by pushing clay in or out and adding clay in parts such as nose, ears and mouth. I will also utilize carving .
